As soon as I saw my object on the shelf, I wasn't sure why I wanted it. I couldn't figure out what was so interesting...until I smelled it. I then remembered, no - TRAVELED back in time to when I was tiny - itty bitty...I thought of my grandmother who I had not seen in ages. I had visions of CLIMBING into chairs at her kitchen table.I thought of the taste and texture of her peanut butter and jelly with potato chip sandwiches...crunchy! I remembered the statue of Mother Mary in the backyard, bunny droppings in the Buffalo, New York grass. The smell of the pine trees, mothballs in the garage, the earthy smell of her basement with really good ice cream in the freezer. The perfume smelled like HER - like a fluffy Italian woman always trying to lovingly suffocate me between her breasts, her "pillows" as she called them. I then remembered her DOGS, coco puff and tipper. When I laid my eyes on my object, the FEELING was neutral, maybe "it's cute"? The smell made me phase out of my world for a while... This dusty bottle of Avon perfume took me back in time and helped me remember things I could not have remembered otherwise. So, maybe it was the LOOK of the object that drew me in - but the smell was my time machine.
I felt a lot of memories come rushing back from my childhood, more specifically, from family vacations. Everything I create right now is about my Grandmother (memory, nostalgia, etc..), so it felt right when I found my object.
I was instantly reminded of being a toddler, and it brought back a memory I hadn't thought about for at least 10 years. Having had the exact same stuffed animal, it triggered a lot of feelings and memories with me.
I saw it and got excited because I literally found an object that was the exact replica of something my family still has back home. There are distinct memories connected with it! It was perfect.
